Swapo vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and secretary general Sophia Shaningwa emerged victorious and retained their position after being elected at the just ended party congress today.
Nandi-Ndaitwah will represent Swapo as the presidential candidate in the national elections in 2024.
Nearly 800 delegates from across the regions gathered at Safari Court Hotel in Windhoek to partake in electing new party leadership.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is the minister of international relations and cooperation , scored 491 votes against Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila with 270 and Pohamba Shifeta with 91 votes for the vice-presidency position.
Swapo secretary general , Shaningwa won by 440 against Armas Amukwiyu with 343 votes. Delegates celebrated the outcome and showed support for the two female candidates.
Minister of Industrialisation and Trade Lucia Iipumbu urged Swapo members that from here onwards they should rally behind the elected leadership, render the necessary support and ensure that the party is ready for 2024 elections.
A party delegate from Khomas region , Ishmael Hamutenya, said the journey to today's victory started back in 2017. " These are just formalities. There is no way to take out our incumbent ( Nandi-Ndaitwah)," stated Hamutenya.
Shifeta, who received 91 votes in the vice presidency race, said he supports the candidates who came out victorious.” Swapo has won and I just want unity in the party,” stated Shifeta.
In addition, Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, Peya Mushelenga, requested Shifeta's supporters to rally behind Nandi-Ndaitwah as vice president Swapo party and Presidential candidate in 2024.
